I took a break yesterday and was looking at the park outside my office. In it is a large, old tree in poor health. The side of the tree has a large gash in it extending 8 feet up the tree and I could see that the center of the tree is rotten. It does not have many more years left. On the ground beside it lay a jumble of limbs that broke from the top of this old tree.
As I sipped my coffee and stared at the scene, I realized that nothing is wasted and in fact, the dying tree is providing for the next generation of life. There are new tree shoots growing from the dying stump. The dead limbs are providing nourishment to the earth, and the tree is still alive and absorbing CO2 and creating Oxygen for me to breathe. If it was spring instead of the middle of winter, there would be birds living in these limbs and animals foraging for food and seeking cover in this tree.
