My son had a blue belt testing for Tai Kwan Do last night. It is a significant milestone because it is the halfway point to a black belt. It was important that I attend this testing as I had missed the previous three.
I left work with plenty of time but traffic stunk. I got home with a few minutes to change clothes but had to help my daughter with a computer problem so she could complete her homework. I ended up missing the first of the three parts of the testing by 3 minutes. Partly due to bad timing and partly to poor prioritizing.
How many times in business do we have so many goals/tasks/”stuff” we are responsible for that our energy and talent is diluted to the point of ineffectiveness? How many times are we spread too thin?
It is our responsibility to customers and employers to perform to our highest ability. Dilution can prevent the best outcome even though we put forth maximum effort. It is important that we have clear priorities and timelines.
Do not permit, if possible, yourself to over commit. Focus on achievements, not commitments.
