Our daughter asked my wife and I to investigate an online school based in Colorado, so we did. We have done some preliminary research and watched a webinar from the school and found that it looks promising. We have more investigating to into the academics but so far this is what I have learned about the school.
The school is 100% online with opportunities for live and recorded classes. This gives the student and family the freedom to schedule activities, vacations, and even daily chores around what is best for the family, not for the entire population of a school district.
2. Personalization and Customization
The selection of classes is broader that can be had at a single school or even district because the student body is composed of the entire state. This broad selection of courses makes it possible for a truly customized learning experience that appeals to the students’ desires, goals, and expertise.
The teachers are available daily via e-mail and telephone for assistance with the coursework. This appears to offer more personalized attention that from the typical classroom. Time will tell.
All of the teachers in this program are Colorado certified instructors who meet the same requirements as a teacher in a brick and mortar school. the level of expertise and care in instruction has the potential to be much better than the average school due to the fact that this is operated by an independent company and not a governmental agency, and students and parents have the ability to immediately provide feedback on coursework and teacher performance via the online portal,
4. Smart business
Colorado is a growing state and has to increase its capacity to educate its populace accordingly. Typically, the capacity increase lags need by a few years. When capacity finally meets demand, the demand drops as a consequence of the normal variation in age of the population.
The online school model is a very good business decision for the state. For instance, the operating budget of an online school will not require the following:
- Student transportation – busing
- Single-use, expensive buildings whose capacity is never optimal that must be replaced every 30 years
- Large support staff for these 2 items
Instead, only a fraction of these funds could be used to provide the following to the students in this new, modern environment:
- Computer to access courses
- Voucher for internet access – especially beneficial to low-income families who may not be able to afford it
- Improved courses and faculty
All of this online school could be housed in a non-descript building in any typical business park across the country. The faculty could be retired teachers working from home. The French teacher could live in and teach from Paris, France instead of Paris, Kentucky or Paris, Illinois.
