There continue to be many books written about time management. Some of them are very good and others do not provide tips that cannot be implemented without major disruptions in your life. Through the years, I have determined a few methods for making better use of my time.
Time manages itself – you must manage your use of it
I frequently wonder why we think we can manage time. Time has been around since, well the beginning of time and it got along for billions of years without anyone managing it. Do we decide to call it “time management” as opposed to “life management” or “priority management” because “time management” appears to place the blame on time instead of us? “I have a time management issue” is less threatening to our self-esteem than “I have a life management issue.”
If you have trouble with accomplishing your goals, don’t blame time for the trouble.
I have only one life
I do not have a life compartmentalized into neat buckets of work, family, spiritual, self/personal, etc. I have a single life. During the day, I may put a higher priority on work than family and in the evening, that priority will shift the other way and personal time should be higher on my priority list. Now that Serena and Douglas are teenagers, I am able to make more time for myself and for writing.
Slow consistency wins most of the time
The human condition resists large, sudden changes. Think marathon running and losing a great deal of weight. Accomplishing either of them does not happen quickly. The way to make changes in your life and the way you manage it is to:
- Make small, consistent changes in the way you approach planning and doing.
- Journal frequently to monitor both progress and your feelings about the progress. Talking to a trusted friend or mentor is a good idea too.
- Remember that setbacks will happen. A setback does not have to mean complete failure. The only way you make zero mistakes is to do nothing.
It is your life to manage. If you cannot or do not manage it properly, don’t blame “time.” Look in the mirror for the culprit.
