I was thinking of the role of the contrarian in business and decided to be the “hornet” whose hive the contrarian pokes. This role reversal is an attempt to understand the how the mainstream reacts to being “poked” by the contrarian’s “stick”.
I came up with this short list and would be glad to receive comments and discuss them with you. The “I” in these examples refers to those being poked.
1. When a contrarian asks provocative questions, I take offense and I react with a stinging rebuke. This swift, harsh reaction is designed to drive-off the one who is trying to change my paradigm.
2. I can choose to ignore the question and instead redouble my efforts to maintaining the status quo.
3. What am I to do if the contrarian’s question needed to be asked and strikes a chord with the group? We should debate the validity of the concept and research to an appropriate answer. We could even dedicate a “tiger team” to dive deep into the issue.
