I was very sorry to see that Andy Griffith passed away recently. I have fond memories of my family watching “Matlock” defend his client by finding who actually committed the crime. Just defending his client was not good enough; he had to catch the perpetrator. Can we use his example in our work?
When working on a project or an assignment, do you aim for the minimal level of acceptability or do you look for ways WOW your boss, customer or client? I have found that most try to achieve the least amount needed to remain on the job. They then complain that their raise is too small or the choice assignments are going to “Jill”. Sorry to say – it is their fault!
The truly amazing thing is that it does not take too much extra effort to WOW the customer/client/boss because they are used to lackluster results. Here are three things you can start doing today that will take you from a whimper to a WOW:
Schedule your calendar so you can return phone calls within 90 minutes. This level of service is unheard of today. My experience is that the response time is usually measured in days, not minutes.
Take the extra effort to check, double-check and then triple-check your work for spelling, grammar and understanding. Make sure what you “think” is on the page is really there.
This item might conflict with item 2. Deliver early, even if it is a rough draft marked “DRAFT”. This shows progress and respect to the customer. Sometimes “life happens” and prevents you from meeting an agreed-to deadline. This step will help mark you as a professional.
Now, go out and get your “man” – conquer your projects in a professional, business-winning manner.
